Fact Sheet: OSHA’s Proposed Rule on Heat Injury and Illness Prevention in Outdoor and Indoor Work

On July 2, 2024, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) released a proposed rule to better protect workers from the health risks of extreme heat. High temperatures increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. They can also stress the heart and kidneys, particularly if a worker already has underlying cardiovascular, respiratory, and diabetes-related chronic conditions. If finalized, this rule could protect approximately 36 million people working in both indoor and outdoor settings.
