Adverse Health Effects of Energy-Related Provisions in the “One Big Beautiful Bill”


On July 4, 2025, President Donald Trump signed into law the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” (OBBBA) of 2025. The White House touted the legislation’s tax cuts, reductions in federal spending, and enhancement of border security. It also projected that the law would spur a massive expansion of domestic oil and gas production, which it claimed would drive down energy costs. The press release about the president’s signing of the bill didn’t mention the public health consequences of either the law as a whole (which will eliminate health insurance for millions of Americans, according to the Congressional Budget Office) or its provisions regarding energy production and use — perhaps because those consequences will be overwhelmingly negative.
