Senator Joe Manchin appears to have abandoned any pretense of fair dealing with his colleagues last night when he insisted on continued delay that will very likely drive a stake through the heart of the two-year effort to pass even modest legislation to address the climate health emergency.
Manchin’s apparent refusal to support significant investments in clean energy condemns millions of people in the U.S. and around the world to preventable illness and death related to climate change. His claim that he is being responsive to inflation appears to be a smokescreen for his commitment to his own coal profits and his fossil fuel donors.
We must keep our eyes on the scale and severity of the climate problem, the pace of its advance, and the clean energy sources which are essential to slow it down.
