This webinar will teach you what you need to know about heat physiology and adaptation, heat impacts on psychiatric symptoms and medications, and how to protect your patients in the extreme heat gripping the world this summer. We will also discuss the impacts of wildfires on psychiatric symptoms and community function, and the role the psychiatrist can play in responding to these emerging health stressors of the climate crisis.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review the thermoregulatory system, its capacity for acclimatization to higher temperatures, and the signs and symptoms of heat illness.
  2. Understand how psychiatric medications and psychiatric illnesses themselves impact the body’s ability to respond to higher temperatures.
  3. Protect patients with mental illnesses from the dangers of extreme heat.
  4. Understand the relationship between wildfires and mental illnesses, including the effects of wildfires on the well-being of first responders and communities and the effect of wildfire smoke on mental symptoms.
