ACEEE and Physicians for Social Responsibility to Unveil New Report on Health Benefits of Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency saves Americans money, creates jobs, and cuts pollution. But less is known about the unseen benefits of energy efficiency on public health and the accompanying medical cost savings. On Wednesday, February 21, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) and Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) will release a pioneering new study that examines the potential impact of energy efficiency programs on public health.

The new report, “Saving Energy, Saving Lives: The Health Impacts of Avoiding Power Plant Pollution with Energy Efficiency,” examines how cutting annual electric consumption by 15 percent would benefit public health in states and the 50 largest US cities, ranking both on the greatest positive impact on the health of people. With increased energy efficiency and reduced air pollution, residents would experience health benefits including: avoided ER trips for asthma attacks, fewer heart attacks, reductions of respiratory illnesses and symptoms, and avoided premature deaths.

Please join us for a webinar and press event at 10 a.m. EST on Wednesday, February 21, 2018. The event will include a full Q&A, and we will first take questions from members of the press. Panelists will include:

  • Sara Hayes, lead author, “Saving Energy, Saving Lives: The Health Impacts of Avoiding Power Plant Pollution with Energy Efficiency,” and program manager, health and environment, ACEEE;
  • Barbara Gottlieb, director, environment & health, PSR; and
  • Dr. Ned Ketyer, M.D., F.A.A.P., American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Environmental Health member
