March 13, 2025
On Wednesday, the Trump administration announced a series of regulatory rollbacks, cutting 31 Biden-era regulations designed to protect clean air and water while boosting industry profit. EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced that the agency would reconsider regulations on power plant pollution, vehicle emissions, and water contamination. The administration is also reconsidering the endangerment finding, which classifies greenhouse gases as harmful to human health.
Health professionals joined hundreds of thousands of public comments in support of many of these regulations. These regulations were built on the best available science, with rigorous review. Dismantling them serves only to benefit polluting industries while directly endangering the communities we serve. Poorer air quality will increase asthma exacerbations, result in higher rates of preterm birth, and cause developmental and neurological harms for infants and young children. Elderly populations and adults with underlying conditions like COPD and diabetes are also at increased risk from pollution exposure. While industry makes more profit, our communities are left paying the price both in terms of their health and rising medical bills.
The EPA has a fundamental duty to protect the health of all Americans by ensuring clean air and water. Weakening these safeguards jeopardizes public health, particularly for the most vulnerable communities. The Consortium opposes these rollbacks and urges the EPA to fulfill its responsibility to base regulations on the best available science. We will continue to advocate for strong, evidence-based policies that protect our patients, our communities, and our planet.
